WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN EVERY PERFORMER
Beyond the Scarlet Door is an epic, emotionally powerful musical adventure that depends on truthful acting, strong character choices and wholehearted storytelling. We’re seeking performers who can bring depth and humanity to the story while embracing its moments of humor, danger, wonder and hope.
We are seeking expressive singer-actors, strong character performers, dancers and movement performers who can bring honesty, imagination and commitment to this theatrical world. The company includes principal, featured and ensemble roles across a wide range of ages. Many performers may portray more than one character during the journey.
The show depends on truthful acting, clear storytelling, strong character choices and confident musical communication. Comedy should come from honest behavior rather than caricature, while the dramatic moments NEED sincerity and emotional courage.
All performers should:
-
Sing confidently and communicate the story of a song.
-
Make specific, truthful acting choices in both dramatic and comic material.
-
Listen, respond and remain fully engaged as an ensemble member.
-
Take direction well and arrive prepared for rehearsals.
-
Bring energy, generosity, reliability and professionalism to the company.
-
Be comfortable with basic movement or choreography appropriate to the role.
-
Treat the show’s biblical source material and fellow company members with respect.
-
Support a safe, collaborative rehearsal room and follow all fight, movement and technical instructions.

For In Person Auditions
-
Prepare 60 to 90 seconds of a contemporary musical-theatre, pop, gospel or worship-influenced song that shows both vocal ability and storytelling.
-
Bring accompaniment music. Do not plan to sing a cappella unless the audition notice specifically permits it.
-
Prepare the posted acting side for your preferred role. If no role-specific side is posted, prepare a one-minute contemporary monologue.
-
Bring a current headshot or clear recent photograph and a résumé if available.
-
Wear clothing and shoes that permit comfortable movement. A short movement combination may be taught for selected roles.
-
Do not bring weapons, stage-combat props or elaborate costumes.
For Video Auditions
-
Begin with a slate stating your name, city and state, preferred role or roles, and the title of your song.
-
Record one continuous 60-to-90-second vocal selection with accompaniment.
-
Record the requested acting side as a separate video. A reader may perform opposite you from behind the camera.
-
Frame the vocal video from approximately the waist or chest upward. Frame movement material so the full body remains visible.
-
Use a quiet, well-lit room with the camera at eye level. Horizontal video is preferred.
-
Submit viewable links from YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive or another platform specified by the theatre. Test every link in a private browser window and provide any required password.
-
Do not apply vocal tuning, beauty filters, dramatic reverb or heavy editing. Simple trimming at the beginning and end is acceptable.
Equal Opportunity Casting Statement
Beyond the Scarlet Door welcomes performers of all races, ethnicities and backgrounds. Casting will be based on the dramatic, vocal, physical and ensemble needs of each role. Unless a role notice states otherwise, performers may be considered for more than one character, and selected featured roles may be doubled. Reasonable audition and rehearsal accommodations may be requested through the production contact.
Minor Performers
For anyone under 18, obtain a parent or legal guardian’s name, email, telephone number and consent before accepting audition media or scheduling an audition.
